Sterling Silver Cake Basket - Antique Victorian (1872). A fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver swing handled cake basket; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. This fine antique Victorian sterling silver cake basket has an oval rounded form onto a domed oval foot. The body this impressive basket is embellished with panels of pierced geometric decoration, bordered with bands of chased bead ornamentation terminating to the lower portion of each section with a floral bead design. The upper portion of the body is encircled with chased decorated stylised floral swags below further pierced decorated diaper patterns in addition to central sunburst rosettes.

The shaped rim of this silver cake basket is ornamented with an applied bead decorated border accented with a stylised petal and bead motif to each incurve. The plain oval shaped central well of this basket is plain and unembellished. This fine example of Victorian silverware retains the original impressive hallmarked swing handle, ornamented with chased and pierced branch and bead decoration incorporating a vacant oval cartouche to the central handpiece. The foot of this impressive cake basket is encircled with a band of undulating geometric designs accented with quatrefoil designs, in addition to further applied bead decoration to the rim. This antique cake basket is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition. The pierced, chased and applied decoration is all very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the surface of the basket and part hallmarks to the handle are all very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
